definition from wiki
Scarifying involves scratching, etching, or some sort of superficial cutting or incision. Scarification can be applied to horticulture, which involves cutting the seed coat using acid, sand paper, or a knife to encourage germination, the cutting of concrete using hydrodemolition, or as a permanent body modification, etching designs, pictures, or words into the skin.
basically its like a tattoo done by peeling skin off a scar tattoo i dont know why anyone would do that, im into piercings and tats, do l think of it like older people think of tattoos? am l old fashioned now? lol more importantly whos willing to do it?
i dont know if im ever going to be into that, l hope not

I've heard of it and it is really just not my thing. l find the thought of the pain and damage involved takes away from any appreciation l might have for the design. But to each their own.

This is extreme, although each to there own. There is one form of modification that l find vile though. That is where people cut there own skin, an one certain part of there body. There private area infact. There is this website for modifications & people upload theres, this is where l first saw this kind of body mutilation. An example of this; Men will cut the head of there penis in half to make it wider, this is DIY aswell. There worst case l saw was a man cut his penis completely in half, so it was almost like a banana skin. That is the worst case l have ever seen. So looking at scarification doesnt make me react no more..

l think it is cool if people like it. l would not personally want to do that to my body but some of the one l saw looked very good.
l know what it is, l read about it.
l mostly do not judge anything myself, l just get information and decide if l want it or not, in that case l don't, but l find it looks good when the body heals it properly. Most of the pics you show area very well done, l like them a lot

That is disgusting. Why would anyone do that to themselves?

now im pretty open minded, especially when it comes to tattoos and piercings. but scarification, especially in the first picture. is disgusting. l mean yeah sometimes it can look cool, but you gotta think of the risks involved. like INFECTION. if you get a bad enough infection you can lose a limb if thats where its on.

Nice links.and this is very far from being a new practice.
l am very familiar with scarification. l have been keen on it for years, but l fear even with the right techniques ad angles, l would not scar very well. My skin is very fair & on top of that does not keloid very well, unfortunately. l am always around the shops & have many friends working in them, l am afraid that it is not common (or even legal, l believe) where l am from.. so l would have to travel to get to the closest reputable scarification artist. That is not to say that l will NEVER do it. Like l said, l do admire the beauty that comes out of it. l am not sure how the process & unhealed stages take away from the final product.. last l knew tattoos & plastic surgery hurt & r not very pretty or look the same until they're healed.
There r many reasons why people preferr this over tattoos and/or piercings. Some may feel that the way that it looks is more aesthetically pleasing, some like the feeling of it more, & some people feel that it is more natural than a tattoo. l will explain; a tattoo is a foreign substance (the pigment.. or ink) injected into the layers of the skin, & the skin heals through that, while when u cut the skin away, the body actually produces the desired effect when healed; the scar. So their own bodies create the artwork. It is neat when u think of it. l very much understand those viewpoints.but l am more open minded than most.and do not really care what other people do to themselves.
Scarification, like tattoos, piercings, brands, & plastic surgery is a legitimate form of body modifications. l believe that it cannot be ''your thing'' but people r really out of place when they ignorantly exclaim how wrong or disgusting it is. Like someone said earlier, to each their own. If u r allowed ur own freedom & personal choices, why can not everyone else be allowed the same rights that u posess without being ridiculed?
And for the people exclaiming about the risks, yes, the risks may be higher, but scarification is not very hard to heal when u r educated in the subject, really. (which l believe ANYONE that modifies their body should be fully knowledgeable in the subject.) So no, the people that usually get it know what they're getting into & usually have not much to worry about. :) So.. u worry about ur own body, not theirs.. most people know what they r getting into.
And as a note, just like many body modifications, some people DO take the application into their own hands, BUT, that is not a standard like Bonnie B makes it seem. Subincisions & the like r not exactly the scarification that was being pictured or talked about. Tons of people have professional scarification artists do work on them. There r very many amazing & well-known artists (at least among the body modification world)known for their scarification work.
This is unfortunately just not as 'mainstream' or trendy at the moment (ie. Lower back & tribal tattoos, facelifts, boob & nose jobs, eyebrow, belly, & tongue piercings.), so just like any other body modification outside of those things r generally 'weird', 'gross' or strictly taboo. so it will be hard for ur little brains to wrap around. I'd give it 10-20 years or so.
